Remotely Sensed Data

The focus of first year of the project has been on data collection, including historical aerial photography. The remote sensing component of the Chersonesos project was initiated in Spring 1998 with a preliminary analysis of IRS panchromatic, and SIR-C/X-SAR data. The imagery was geometrically corrected and preliminary classification was performed to provide a prototype result for fieldwork conducted in Summer 1998. A basic reconnaissance study was conducted of sites in the local archaeological park as well as an extended area beyond the Heraklean Peninsula for land cover, coastal erosion, and general topographic characteristics of the region.

Since then, high-resolution satellite photography from the declassified Corona mission have been acquired, digitized, and geo-referenced and are being used to study the overall pattern of the dividing roads and the relationship between the pattern of human settlement and the natural environment. Historical Landsat multispectral data have also been obtained to map changes in the chora over the past thirty years. The imagery also provides the spatial framework for a digital Geographic Information System (GIS) where features in the imagery are related to archaeological structures now being excavated and mapped by an international team of researchers. Finally, interferometric SAR data from ERS are being utilized to develop a digital elevation model (DEM) which has heretofore been unavailable to researchers due to the extreme military sensitivity of the area. The resulting DEM will be used in conjunction with the multispectral imagery and geophysical and geomorphological data to study human settlement of the area and identify and monitor vulnerable parts of the chora.
