Site 151: A Hellenistic Farmhouse

In 1994, the Institute of Classical Archaeology, in conjunction with the National Preserve of Tauric Chersonesos, began excavation at Site 151, a Hellenistic farmhouse (dating to the late 4th to early 2nd centuries BC). This structure was completely excavated by 1996. It is an impressive structure with a tower and walls preserved in some areas to over 2 meters, and it was found virtually intact and in a good state of preservation. Once excavated, however, that condition could only deteriorate rapidly unless measures were taken. A pilot project of conservation was begun in 1996 and completed this year. This effort is part of an overall plan to preserve the ancient monuments of Chersonesos and its chora.

ICA is currently working towards the publication of the excavation results from this site as well as from the hilltop fortress, Bezymyannaya.
