Texas remains vulnerable to fires following the extended drought period of summer 2000. The fire on Glass Mountain was one of the largest wildfires in the state this year. During the fire emergency, the Texas DEM worked closely with several state agencies to coordinate emergency response. Over the next two weeks, the DEM posted situation reports on the Internet. These describe the level of effort required to combat the fire.

The GOES-8 sensor acquired multiple scenes showing the West Texas fire's development. In the image above, the smoke palls from several large fires are visible. Also visible to the southwest of the Glass Mountain fire are remnants of the weather system that brought lightning but little or no rain to the area.
