During the emergency response to Hurricane Bret, TNRIS staff supported the Emergency Operation Center of the DEM with hardcopy map products, color infrared digital orthoimagery, satellite mage base maps with GIS overlays, and near-real time relays of new satellite imagery for use by search-and-rescue and damage assessment teams.

A comparison of Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper and Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper-Plus images collected over the central portion of Padre Island dramatically illustrates the changes that occurred to the barrier system with the passage of Bret. Twenty-six areas of outwash cuts were opened in the barrier, which experienced approximately 30 meters of beach erosion. The locations and sizes of such features were documented within four days after Bret's landfall using Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery transferred to TNRIS from the USGS EROS Data Center in South Dakota.

The before and after images of the Padre Island coast south of Mansfield Pass feature a 453 band combination notable for enhancing inundation areas in marshland environments.
