During 2000, a normal seasonal greening of vegetation occurred across much of Texas in April and May, but drought conditions became increasingly evident in many areas during June and July. Note the lack of green vegetation in west-central Texas throughout the four-month period. Other than areas of irrigated cropland in the High Plains, the western half of the state exhibits high levels of vegetation stress by the third week of July.
