TSGC/CSR High School Summer Internship Program


  • Submit your application online by April 10, 2015.
  • Upload the following files with your online application:
    1. Copy of your High School Transcript: Courses completed, GPA (if school calculates), Class rank (if assigned)
    2. Letter of Recommendation* from your school principal, curriculum coordinator, school counselor, science teacher or mentor
    3. Essay following the online guidelines

    Your essay should not exceed 1000 words. Describe yourself and discuss each of the following as part of your essay. You are not limited to these areas.

    1. Important academic or life experiences in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math)
    2. Extracurricular activities that have influenced you in a positive way (include skills you deem valuable for an academic team research setting)
    3. Your current academic path and career plans
    4. How your experience in this program will impact your plans for the future

    *The Letter of Recommendation may be sent separately but must arrive by the deadline.

    Incomplete and late applications will not be reviewed.


    • Open to current high school Sophomores or Juniors ONLY (will be rising Juniors and Seniors) who have not worked as a UT/CSR intern previously.
    • Students must be able to provide their own transportation and housing. Students must be able to work July 20 - August 13, 2015 for 24 hours per week. Hours are 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday-Thursday at The University of Texas Center for Space Research, West Pickle Research Center, Austin, Texas.
    • Students who complete the internship will receive $750 stipend for their work. (Students must be at least 16 years of age by June 1, 2015 in order to receive the stipend. Any students selected that do not meet the age requirement may volunteer their time but will not be eligible for summer internship pay.)


    All students will be notified by May 1 if they have been accepted into the program.


    • ICESat (Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite) Ice Sheets: Students will compute ice sheet elevation changes from ICESat-1 laser altimetry using several methods and will compare to determine which method is best for estimating the changes of the major ice sheets covering Greenland and Antarctica. The research will involve computation of elevation change rates from the laser measurements, determining comparison statistics, and visualizing results.

    • ICESat Global Analyses: Students will examine ICESat-1 laser altimetry collected at CSR's primary test site in White Sands, NM, and data from other in situ experiments collected over the course of the mission. Analyses will include data visualization, satellite calibration, and comparison with high-rate airborne laser altimetry.

    • MAGIC (Mid-American Geospatial Information Center): Students will assess atmospheric environmental data from satellites Landsat 5, 7, 8 and Terra and Aqua MODIS. They will also analyze which days have data available to compare Landsat and MODIS near simultaneous satellite overpasses.

    • GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment): Students will examine mission relevant data to answer questions pertinent to the GRACE and GRACE-FO (follow-on) missions.
